I am a mother of two babies. One is 22 months and another one is 9 months old. I hired confinement nannies during the first month to help to care for the babies and to get my weak body nourished. Many would hire confinement nanny to take care of mother and baby during the first month.
I did some research online and manage to get a confinement nanny from singapore motherhood website recommendation and testimonial.
I prepared my interview questions and called to speak to her over the phone. The questions I asked her were:-
- How is her schedule like for baby care and whether she covers any housework
- The details of the confinement nanny's job scopes
- The confinement meal menu that she will be cooking
- Any expectation of bonus prior arrival and after confinement month
- What is the exact confinement fee she charges and her deposit of booking?
- When to inform her to get ready if it is natural birth or Caesarian?
- How supportive of her towards breastfeeding as some nanny will prefer to let baby to be fed on formula so that the baby is less cranky.
- How is her expectation on mother who needs to shower daily. Will she object to it or respect my will to shower everyday?
- How receptive is her if we have some thought to share with her. For e.g., what if we prefer not to use cradle for baby or we prefer not to shake the baby to make the baby sleep?
The confinement nanny also has a few questions and expectations for me as follow:-
- How many family members in the family? (Normally she wants to know as she would prefer family without parents or parents in law so that she will be under lesser observations and instructions. Therefore, if you have parents or parents in law living with you, you can try to assure the nanny that your parents or in laws would respect her job).
- She will not be able to cook for the whole family as she needs to give priorities to the baby and mother. However, if she is working in family where the members help her to lighten her load in anyway, she would be happy to cook for all in appreciation of the family's helps such as looking after the baby when she is cooking.
- She will not be able to do the laundry for the whole family as again her priority is the baby and mother.
- She may or may not rest in the day so that she can attend to any baby calls through your the night. I feel that it is fair that she gets some rest as she is ultimately a human being who needs adequate sleep.
- Does she needs to go marketing on ingredients for cooking everyday? Will there be anyone in the family help to do the shopping as the baby needs round the clock attention and care.
- I also described to her about her bedroom during my confinement and who will she be co-sleeping with in the bedroom.
During my confinement period, here are some sharing about what she has done for me and my baby:-
1. She taught me how to shower the new born which I have clueless prior to my first bath for my baby. She taught me how to start from showering the baby with the baby's clothes on, after finished with hair wash and wiped it dry, I took out the baby's shirt with the nappy was still on, I then cleaned the baby's body with water and rinsed with baby's soap, finally I took out the baby's nappy and washed with water and soap without putting the baby in the tub. While holding the baby with supporting her neck and upper back, I gave my baby a nice soak in the clean water tub.
2. She taught me how to burp the baby after every feed so that the baby will not vomit out or get choke with milk.
3. She ensured all the milk bottle and milk pump containers are clean and sterilized after every usage.
4. She apply baby chinese medicated oil onto tummy to prevent. Any choice problems.
5. She tried to let the baby pass motion every time after feeding of breast milk as breastfeeding babies tend to poo every time after every feed.
6. She cleaned the baby buttock with water and cottons instead of wet wipes to prevent nappy rashes. She applied baby buttock cream after pat drying the baby's butts
7. She helped baby to don warmer chothes and hat at night to prevent baby from catching any flu.
8. She ensured mother to wear long sleeves and pants, socks and home slippers so that I don't catch any cold and fall sick due to my post pregnancy weak body.
9. She cooked well balanced nutrition morning breakfast, lunch and dinner. She normally ended supper with nutritious soup for me.
10. She passed the baby for me to breastfeed my baby during the day and night every 2-3 hours. If I couldn't get up at night, I will inform her that I am tired and need to rest more, she will give the baby the milk that I stowed in the fridge by making warm the milk for the baby.
My overall confinement months were very pleasant with good nannies. I will share more on other not so good experiences with other nannies too in the future posts.
Feel free to drop any message here if you have any feedback or enquiries for me. Thank you! I hope all new mummies enjoy their lovely confinement months as happy and relax as possible! 😍
